Robotic Prostate Surgery - A Real Alternative
|
Prostate cancer is considered to be one of the dreaded diseases that has affected the world and it is believed that in the United States alone the number of people suffering from this dreaded disease touched a staggering figure of 232,000. This revelation can alone tell the entire story. In traditional prostate surgery, a single large incision is created in the lower abdomen. Whereas during robotic surgery, several tiny openings are made to place robotic arms. These robotic arms include camera heads and a sectioning instrument. In traditional surgeries, the surgeon was supposed to stand and work upon the bodies of patients for endless tiring hours. But now the situation has changed. Now, the surgeon sit with his hands attached with a sensor that guide his hands on the robotic tools. It give the flexibility to cut, seal, suction and remove affected tissue to the surgeon with high degree of precision. The Robotic system can reduce even minute surgical troubles to a huge extent. This robot is a medical assistant as it gives 3D view inside the organ. Along with this, the pressurized gas is pumped into the abdomen to ensure less bleeding. A mere proper view inside the organ can make a whole lot of difference from the traditional prostate surgery. And less bleeding means quick recovery and less of pain. One can also be discharged out of the hospital at an earlier date than the date associated with the traditional surgeries. One can feel good after this surgery as the performance of the surgery does not leave any visible scars. But there are certain drawbacks of robotic prostate surgery. The biggest drawback is the lack of physical handling or sensation. The doctor cannot feel the thickness of different knots. He has to rely upon his vision, knowledge and prior experience. The number of cases in which the patients opts for the performance of a robotic surgery are constantly on the rise. Robotic surgery was once considered nerve-sparing surgery but now it has become a standard form of prostate surgery for cancer. The reduced level of associated side-effects is also one of the main reason for its popularity. Earlier robotic surgeries were used in just research and margined cases but in the field of prostate surgery, the trend is changing. As the number of prostate cancer patients is going up, traditional surgeries must not be seen as the only available alternative. When we have available statistics to prove the effectiveness, speed and accuracy of robotic prostate surgeries, skepticism over unknown would be daftness. Waiting and fooling around can only make the matters of overgrown prostate worst. Instead of relying upon the only available view, one should ask for a second opinion from a qualified and well-known surgeon. And only after weighing the pros and cons of all the options, and matching them with your disease status, one must undergo the necessary surgery.
