A Guide On Prostate Surgery

The prostate gland is a male organ which is present at the base of the bladder. Its primary function is to help in the storage and secretion of the alkaline fluid which along with spermatozoa (mature sperm cell) constitute male semen. It also contains several smooth muscles that are beneficial in expelling the semen from the male body during the process of ejaculation.

Cancer in prostate gland can be described as a disorder that develops in the prostate gland of males. It is essential to undertake Prostate surgery, called as prostatectomy, for removing this cancer. The enlargement of the prostate gland can be surgically removed. This surgery is recommended when the patient suffers from complications such as urinary retention, stages A and B of the prostate cancer and recurrent prostate bleeding. However, the surgery is not recommended to patients who have a history of bladder and blood clotting disorders.

Prostate surgery can be undertaken by a male patient suffering from prostate cancer for the removal and testing of the lymph nodes. The surgery may also be performed to solve urinary problems such as problems in urine control and discharge. The surgery depends on the age, general health, stage of prostate cancer and past medical history of the patient.

There are different types of Prostate surgery which are mentioned as below:

Laparoscopic prostate surgery:

In this surgery, two incisions are made at both sides of the lower abdomen and one incision is made below the belly button. A small tube is placed into the incision below the belly button with carbon dioxide which is then passed into the male abdominal cavity. This allows the surgeon to have a better insight of the cavity. This procedure involves less loss of the blood and intake of pain medicines, quick recovery and a shorter stay at the hospital.

Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP): It is performed using general or spinal anesthesia and is widely regarded as the most commonly surgical procedure adapted by doctors globally. A resectoscope is inserted into the male penis to the urethra. It is then moved upwards towards the prostate gland. The gland is removed with the help of a special instrument. The resultant bleeding from the above procedure is stopped by the use of electric current. Urine is then removed from the body with the help of Foley Catheter and a liquid solution can be attached to it to devoid clogging of blood. The time duration involved in this surgery is one hour only but the patient is required to stay in the hospital for at least 4 days.

Cryosurgery: This is a procedure which involves freezing the cells in order to kill the prostate cancer. This is done by placing a small metal tool in the tumor.

Laser prostatectomy: It involves the use of light beams to destroy the prostate tissue in the male body. The urine flow rate is enhanced as the beams tend to destruct the prostate tissue which is acting as a blockage at urethra opening and outlet of the bladder. Urine is then removed from the body with the help of Foley Catheter. A patient undergoing this procedure for the removal of prostate does not need a stay at the hospital.

There are some side effects of Prostate surgery which are:

* Breathing problems. * Incompetence. * Urine control problems. * Infertility.

One must have regular medical checkups to detect the prostate cancer at any early stage. The symptoms of the disease are not clearly visible. Therefore it is important to be vigilant regarding your health and act before its too late.
