After Care Measures During Prostate Surgery Recovery

The recovery time of prostate surgery varies with each case. In prostate surgery, the enlarged tissues which bother the wall of urethra are removed. So, the amount of time spent in hospital after the surgery depends upon the severity of your case, the type of your surgery and also your recovery capacity. During the prostate surgery recovery, a catheter tube is placed in the penis to transfer urine from the bladder to the collection bag.

Catheter is mostly left in urethra for several days. It may give bladder twitches for the first few days after the surgery, but after some time they will disappear.

To prevent infections, you might be prescribed certain antibiotics. But various researches in this field have shown no need of antibiotics at all. Hence, your doctor may not consider giving antibiotics to you unless an infection erupts. You should also have a proper fluid intake so that your bladder can be flushed regularly.

After prostate surgery, you may have cloudy urine or blood clots in your urine. It happens because your wound is in healing stage and will stop before you leave the hospital. It usually takes sometime to urinate properly even after the discharge from hospital. Once the catheter is removed, urine will pass over the operated tissues of the prostate. This may cause discomfort in the form of an urgent sensation to urinate. But this condition will gradually improve once the wound gets healed and the bladder starts functioning properly.

After transurethral surgery, the crust inside the bladder may loosen and you may notice blood in the urine. This is an alarming condition and you should let your doctor know about this. Appropriate amount of fluid intake and proper bed rest may help you to deal with this condition. Excessive bleeding can be an indication towards a big medical complication.

You should, therefore, take proper rest for a few weeks after the surgery. Before getting started on your normal routine, consult your doctor. There have been some cases when the healing incision gets disrupted as a result of some heavy works.

Here are some points one needs to keep in mind as after care measures:

* Drink a lot of water to flush the bladder. * Don't strain while having a bowel movement. * A good diet is recommended to get rid of constipation. Consult your doctor if facing constipation. * If kept on narcotics to deal with pain, don't drive. * Heavy work like lifting should be avoided.

After undergoing prostate surgery, you must regularly get your prostate checked as it would keep any future trouble at bay. The prostate gland continues on growing even after the surgery, so, regular check ups may spot any further repercussions.
