How is colon surgery conducted?

Through surgery, location of the cancer in the particular section of the colon is removed. After removal, the remaining part of the colon is again rejoined for normalizing the functioning of colon. One of the common surgery procedure is named as open colectomy. This is the standard surgery procedures to remove cancerous part of the colon. In this surgical procedure, an externally worn big bag is used to expel the waste from the colon. After this surgery, patients are usually kept in the hospitals for about five to eight days. However, patients may require six or more weeks after the hospital discharge for complete recovery after the surgery.

Removal of cancerous part of the colon are carried out through following surgical procedures -

* Local excision In this surgery, only the cancerous portion of the colon, including some surrounding normal tissues are removed.

* Anterior resection An anterior resection surgery entails removal of cancer, normal tissues surrounding the cancer and some normal uninvolved normal colon tissues, which lie above and below the cancerous part including the lymph nodes. After surgery, the colon is reattached again.

* Low anterior resection In this process, surgeons take out cancerous part of the lower sigmoid colon, normal tissues around the cancer and lymph nodes. After surgery, colon is attached to the lower rectum area.

* Abdominal perennial resection If the surgeon locates cancer very near to the anal opening area, then the entire rectum and anal part are removed through a colostomy. Through making an opening in the abdomen wall of the lower rectum portion, patient's body wastes are removed into a bag.

* Extended resection If the cancer is first developed at its original location and and then starts penetrating into the other organs like pelvic or abdominal areas, vagina or bladder, an extended resection surgery process is applied. This extensive surgical process continues along with an external and intraoperative radiation and chemotherapy process. Usually, this chemotherapy and radiation therapy is given prior to the extended resection process.

* Colostomy sparing procedures In such procedures, the entire colon or rectum irrespective of the cancerous part gets removed. Surgeons make an opening or a stoma through colostomy in the skin layer and extracts the waste in a special bag.
