TURP (Transurethral resection of the prostate) is a surgery which remove some of the enlarged prostate gland tissues so that urine can be discharged freely. The prostate surgery takes around one hour but the patient is supposed to stay in the hospital for a period of four days after the prostate surgery. The surgery is done under general anesthesia. As the effect of anesthetic fades, you might experience some pain. And the anesthetist would suggest use of painkillers for reducing the pain level. You may need to be put on a drip to prevent possible dehydration. Once you start taking your fluid intake, it would be taken off. Even after the operation, a catheter is left in your bladder. You could notice some bags lying on your bed. They stored running urea comes into your bladder via the catheter. This prevents the possibility of the formation of blood clots. As the catheter tube lies in your bladder, you might face the urge to pass urine. After a few minutes this sensation would die down. Tell your doctor or caretaker if your bladder seems full. Even a small blood clot may cause this feeling. * After some time, the catheter can be removed when the urine starts to clear itself. This usually happens within the first few days. After the prostate surgery has been performed you may notice opaque urine discharges for a few days. In the beginning, there could be a difficulty in keeping the control over the flow followed by constant urge to pass the urine which could be problematic. Painkillers may be prescribed to the patients, if deemed fit by the physician. Drinking at least two liters of fluid helps you to cleanse you bladder and regain your body strength. Along with the urination, you may notice blood clots in your urine. Urine leakage due to little strain is also common after the performance of the prostate surgery. If you notice pain, bleeding and increased temperature, you should report to your doctor immediately. There are several mild and temporary side-effects of the prostate surgery. There can be a constant feeling of lethargy as a result of the general anesthetic medication. And some discomfort can be caused by the presence of a catheter. But there is a popular myth that prostate surgery can cause impotency. Medical practitioners have proved it to be baseless. Because, in most of the cases, a successful surgery never affects one's fertility. But, there are the chances of a regrown prostate. And in those cases, another surgery could be done.
